Summer is officially here, and I have to admit the morning coffee tastes just a little better paired with longer daylight hours and the promise of weekend barbecues ahead.
There’s something particularly satisfying about the reliability of seasonal patterns. We know, for example, exactly when to expect the first tomatoes from the garden and how to time our trips to the shore to avoid the biggest crowds.
If only financial markets operated with such clockwork predictability! But markets have their own rhythm, and it’s one that’s driven by a complex mix of geopolitical events, economic data, and human emotion rather than seasonal cycles.
When Headlines Write the Script
Since 2020, we’ve witnessed an unusually compressed trilogy of market-shaking events: the COVID pandemic, skyrocketing inflation, and now the current tariff concerns. Each of these disruptions sent stocks tumbling, proving once again that markets have a flair for the dramatic. What typically unfolds over decades has been crammed into a mere five-year span, like binge-watching an entire Netflix series in one weekend. Technically possible, but emotionally exhausting.
And, if I can speak plainly here, while I spend my days advising clients on navigating these challenges, I’m also an investor planning for my own family’s future, facing the same headlines, the same uncertainties, and the same decision points you are.
Through each of these episodes, my approach as an investor has remained unchanged. I’ve held firm to my plan through each peak and valley, maintaining the same disciplined strategy during COVID’s uncertainty as I did during inflation’s sting, and as I’m doing now with tariff tensions.
I won’t pretend that I’m immune to temporary worry about current events, but those moments don’t lead me to abandon the strategy that’s been carefully crafted to help me reach my goals. My long-term optimism remains unshakeable because, while headlines change with every news cycle, the fundamentals of sound investing don’t.
The Timeless Three-Act Structure
History reveals a remarkably consistent pattern, regardless of the underlying crisis. Whether we’re discussing World War II, 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, or our recent challenges, the story follows the same three-act structure: troubling news emerges, markets react with a selloff, and recovery eventually follows. It’s like a well-crafted comedy where Act One presents the problem, intermission allows for nervous anticipation, and Act Two delivers the resolution.
The frustrating reality for investors is that, while we know this pattern exists, we can never predict the timing of each act. The news breaks quickly, markets typically respond just as fast, but the downturn’s duration remains the great unknown. How long will this last? How much worse might it get? These questions plague every investor’s mind during turbulent times, making it tempting to abandon the script entirely.
Why This Time Feels Different
During periods like these, the temptation to believe “this time is different” becomes particularly strong, and it’s one of those phrases that sounds reasonable in the moment. After all, these tariff concerns might feel unique, especially after the compressed timeline of recent disruptions. But here’s what experience teaches: while the underlying causes of market uncertainty are always different, the fundamental pattern remains remarkably consistent.
That being said, the current situation does offer some interesting variations. Unlike COVID, which blindsided the world, these trade policy concerns were well telegraphed throughout the election cycle. More importantly, unlike pandemics that require scientific breakthroughs and global coordination to resolve, trade policies can shift with the stroke of a pen, a diplomatic breakthrough, a court ruling, or congressional action. The “how” of resolution is more defined here, even if the “when” remains elusive.
So what evidence do we have that this time, despite some singular characteristics, really isn’t ultimately different?
The Power of Historical Perspective
When current events dominate our thinking, our brains have a peculiar way of dismissing historical facts in favor of present fears. Looking backward allows us to see what our forward-focused anxiety obscures: markets have consistently advanced over time, even when the path felt impossibly treacherous. This upward trajectory has persisted through world wars, financial panics, and countless other disruptions that seemed insurmountable at the time.
At N1 Advisors, our planning process acknowledges this reality by building these inevitable disruptions into our framework. We don’t pretend calamities won’t occur; we prepare for them. Our investment philosophy rests on the cornerstone that long-term optimism will continue to triumph over short-term pessimism, just as it has through every previous crisis.
Staying the Course
The most successful investors aren’t those who perfectly time the market’s movements. They’re the ones who resist the urge to let current headlines rewrite their long-term strategy. While the characters and settings of each crisis may change, the fundamental story remains the same. The market will face challenges, investors will worry, and eventually, recovery will emerge.
As we enjoy these longer summer days, remember that investing success isn’t about predicting which clouds will bring rain. It’s about having a sturdy umbrella ready for when storms inevitably arrive. The script may not be written for how long current concerns will persist, but history suggests there will be a final act to these present concerns – and to the ones that will surely follow in time.
It’s my honor to stand beside you through the inevitable twists and turns of the market, both as your trusted advisor and as a fellow investor. Here’s to staying focused on our long-term goals while the market writes its next chapter!
